A Surprising Source of Super Sustenance

Picture the scene.

It’s a hot day in the Voerstreek, with the temperature rising to above 26 degrees Celsius. I’ve been walking since nine o’clock in the morning, and now it’s four in the afternoon.

I’ve walked about 23 kilometres, and I have about three left.

I’m hot. I’m tired. My throat is parched. I’ve drunk all my water. Civilization and the nearest shop or café is still 45 minutes away. But currently I’m in the middle of nowhere.

And then I round a bend and see … a mirage? An illusion?

No, it really is this:Ice cream vending machine

An AUTOMATIC ICE-CREAM VENDING MACHINE!

I couldn’t believe it. I’ve blogged about automatic vending machines in Belgium, selling bread, potatoes, strawberries, butter, milk … but never ice-cream.

What a brilliant idea!

I quickly got my 2 euros out and very much enjoyed and appreciated a lovely cooling and refreshing tub of straciatella ice-cream!

  1. Lucky you found this vending machine before you expired! What a great idea. We stayed in a hostel in Dublin once where there was a cheeseburger vending machine. My girls thought they were in heaven!
