This short 4 km walk accompanies the visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen.
This walk is ideal to do after your visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen or to stretch your legs after an event there.
The walk starts from the entrance to the castle (which is in the right of the picture, by the blue flags). Walk up the avenue, which is called the Maastrichterallee. The avenue was looking particularly beautiful in the autumn sunshine, but will have its attractions during any time of the year.Part of the grounds of the Grand Commandery have been converted into an all-season walk through the orchards. It’s a great place to take your packed lunch and enjoy the large picnic tables and benches that have been set our for you. What’s that: you hate preparing picnics? You can order one from the Grand Commandery! (Just click on the picture) First stop at the end of the Maastrichterallee is this building. In the center is the gatehouse and archway. To the left is the Apostle’s House, which now houses an art gallery and restaurant. To the right is the Trumpeter’s House, where the gatekeeper lived. Both buildings date back to 1663. Click on the photo to go to the restaurant website.
The Apostle’s House, Alden Biesen
Here’s a video of the Apostle’s House in busier times, during the Ronde van Limburg cycle race:
You can follow the map at the end of this post or the blue arrows. The quiet lane leads you through some pleasant undulating countryside … with some views over the landscape to the distant wind turbines …… through some quiet wooded paths (a fox crossed the path in front of me here) …… and with more benches for a rest or a picnic.A typical Limburg scene. You don’t go far in Limburg without seeing orchards and cattle!Or sheep! The walk circles the Grand Commandery and gives you some interesting views of the place from a distance. This is not part of the Grand Commandery but is a hotel belonging to the Martin’s hotel chain. It has been built in what was the house of the Commandery’s steward in the 13th century.Yet another stopping place, this one overlooking the reedbed and pond. And you know what in the distance.
As I said earlier, this walk is an addition to your visit to the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen. I visited the castle in the morning, enjoyed this walk and my packed lunch on one of the benches, and then visited the uniquely see-through “Reading between the Lines Church” in the afternoon. Together, the castle, the walk and the church make a fine day out in Limburg. Here’s a sneak peek of the church:
Lovely walk and scenery, and ordering a picnic lunch is certainly a bonus. The photo of the table and benches is very interesting with the table going over the sides. 🙂
The autumn colours are so beautiful in your photos, Denzil.
Thanks Carol. A bit of sunshine always makes a difference.

Yes Judy, although I have to admit that the price of the picnic is not within everyone’s reach. 💵
What a lovely walk today, Denzil. A great respite from a frenetic season.
Thanks Sharon, I was lucky with the weather. Hope you are well.
