I first visited the Japan Cultural Centre in Zoutleeuw a couple of years ago, and was amazed at the energy and creativity of the owners, Saskia and Bart. They really have some great events there. The Japan Cultural Centre is an organization aiming to spread authentic Japanese culture in Belgium. They organize workshops and classes at their centre in Zoutleeuw or on location. One such workshop is coming up on Saturday October 1st: Sumi-E painting with Afaq Saleem.
Sumi-E is the Japanese discipline of meditative painting, using only a brush, ink, and paper to paint what you feel rather than what you see. Sumi-E really is for everyone; it teaches you to look at nature and yourself, and it’s a perfect hobby if you don’t have a lot of time, space or money.
Mr. Afaq Saleem is a Dutch Sumi-E artist of Asian origin who has studied the technique in Japan and China for the past 20 years. His favorite subject is birds, and they will surely feature in this workshop. Mr. Saleem is not only a gifted artist, but also an inspiring teacher with a bag full of tips and tricks. This workshop is aimed at participants with at least limited experience with Sumi-E technique; other workshop dates for beginners are on the website calendar.
