Enjoy a drink in your local, and learn a lot at the same time!
What’s Pint of Science?
Pint of Science is an annual international science festival that takes place every May. It brings researchers to your local pub to show you the latest happenings in the world of science. In 2017, the festival held 574 events across 10 countries, involving over 80,000 attendees. This year the festival will be held simultaneously in 21 countries, including — for the first time — Belgium.
Where in Belgium?
39 events are planned in seven cities in Belgium on May 14, 15 and 16, 2018:
What’s on the program?
Events usually include two or three talks by scientists, as well as a fun interactive activity. All sorts of fascinating topics are on the program. Here’s a few that caught my eye.
Aging of the Brain. How does your brain evolve and age? Is your brain the same age as the rest of your body? What’s the difference between forgetfulness, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease? Monday 14th May, Kapitein Zeppos, Vleminckveld 78, 2000 Antwerp, 7-10 pm
While you were sleeping. What is actually happening when you sleep? Why is it so crucial to our day-to-day existence? Can you learn while you sleep? Tuesday 15th May, Jester, 2-4 Avenue de la Porte de Hal, 1060 Brussels, 7-10 pm
Resistance and failures. Less is more? Antibiotics, paracetamol … we hear so often that too much medication is not OK. But do we listen? And the negative consequences are only getting bigger. What’s the solution? More of less or less of more? Tuesday 15th May, De Koepuur, Coupure Links 651, 9000 Gent 7-10 pm
Tech me out! Cell phones, space debris and the dark web. Ever wondered what information your smartphone broadcasts? Do you want to know what happens to discarded satellites? What can (or should) we do on the ‘dark web’? Wednesday 16th May, Belgaleiro, Goudsbloemstraat 50, 3000 Leuven, 7-10 pm
Check out the full Pint of Science program. Some talks are in English, others in Dutch and/or French. You’re advised to book your ticket online (it’s only 3 EUR).
Enjoy your Pint!
Thanks for the info Denzil – I’m going to try and go to one in Brussels now. Cheers!
Enjoy!
This is my kind of festival! Learning new things while having a glass of ale.
Or two. Or three. Considering it’s over three hours. Should be called Pints of Science.
You make a good pint
I have high hops for it.
🙂 Puns are just awful, until you think of one, then they’re kind of great
Yeah, not ale puns are brilliant
I’m not usually a science nerd, but all these topics sound really interesting! I’d particularly like to hear the one on what happens while you sleep.
Yes Erin, intriguing, especially the link with learning while sleeping. If only I knew that earlier.
What a great idea. I would go for sure if we were there!

You do make the most wonderful discoveries, Denzil. I had a look at the international site and found that there are events in Durham, but I’d never heard of this festival. Thank you very much! 🙂 🙂 Shall you be attending one?
Yes for such a big international event I too was surprised to have never heard of it Jo. Will I be attending? To be honest, I’m not one for long evening events, especially after a busy day of work, sitting behind a computer. My wife and I always go an evening walk for 30-45 minutes every day, which I find relaxing and healthy.
Yes, that sounds good to me, too. 🙂 🙂 There’s an energy related one that quite appeals up at Durham, but it relies on Michael driving and not drinking so it’s only a maybe. 🙂 One event has already sold out so I don’t suppose they’ll miss us. Nice to know, though.
This sounds like such a great opportunity to learn something new. Only two cities in the US are involved, both on the East Coast. Thanks for a peek into what other countries do to expand one’s view of the world of science.
BTW, I noticed that Russia was listed in the Europe section – I thought it was part of Asia.
Interestingly, I had to research this point for an article and discovered that 23% of Russia is officially in Europe! Although I can’t see them joining the European union. Mind you, there’s soon going to be a vacancy 😣
