Spontin and the Bocq Valley

Wanting to take full advantage of the promise of a hot Saturday – a rare occurrence in Belgium this year, and even more exceptional in October – today I decided to explore the countryside around the pretty little village of Spontin, which is located in the Condroz area of Belgium, 15 km south of Namur and easily accessible from junction 19 of the E411.

A good network of well signposted footpaths — on this Spontin footpaths map — connects Spontin with its neighboring villages of Durnal, Purnode and Dorinne. I chose to follow the footpath going directly east through the Valley of the Bocq, a small river that cuts through heavily wooded valley. Also in the valley is the Bocq Railway which connects Ciney with Yvoir. Most of the time a diesel train operates on the line, but on special occasions a steam train runs. I returned along the southerly footpath, from Purnode, through Dorinne and back  into Spontin. Here’s a few photos of the villages and the surrounding countryside.
