Enjoy a winter walk through the Bokrijk Open Air Museum. Just follow the lights!
Here’s something to bookmark or put into your agenda for the coming holiday period. The Bokrijk Open Air Museum is closed until December 25, 2021. However, from December 26 to January 9 and every Sunday in January and February you can discover the Open Air Museum completely free of charge for a winter walk.
During these dates, the buildings themselves are closed but you can walk around them in the park. Wintry illuminations will show you where to go, and will light up the buildings. The Open Air Playground is also open and freely accessible during these times.
Discovering Belgium’s roving photographer Herman Vandecauter highly recommends a winter walk in Bokrijk. He’s visited it a few times in recent years. Here are a few of his photos.

As I said earlier, the buildings are closed so you can’t go inside them. However, you’ll be able to have a warming drink, as the “Herberg Sint-Gummarus” and “Het Koetshuis” are both open.
Remember, if you want to enjoy a winter walk around Bokrijk, it’s only open from December 26 to January 9, and every Sunday in January and February. Note that on these days, the park is open from 2 pm to 7 pm. So it’s probably advisable to get there around 4 or 5 pm to make the most of the illuminations before the place closes. Also note that it’s closed on Dec 31, 2021 and Jan 1, 2022. Admission is free. More info is on the Bokrijk website.
Maybe you could combine it with another walk in Limburg? Here are a few examples:
- The See-Through Church of Borgloon
- The Alden Biesem Grand Commandery
- De Maten nature reserve
- The Mechelse Heide
Let me know how you get on! It sounds a lovely experience, also for the children. Any questions? Just contact me. And if you’ve not yet subscribed to Discovering Belgium, just add your email below:
So good to know that this kind of event is taking place again, Denzil. We could all use a little Christmas magic this year. Enjoy your festive season!
Yes, although with the fragility of the situation you never know for sure until a few days before the event is due.
Tell me about it! I have an upcoming post ??
That would be a treat but I’d need all my woolly layers on. 🙂
