Discover Floridylle at Meise Botanic Garden: a wonderful winter light walk tracing the evolution of life
On crisp winter evenings, when daylight fades early, there are few experiences more magical than a walk illuminated by light, story, and nature. Floridylle, the winter light festival at Meise Botanic Garden just outside Brussels, transforms the garden into a glowing, immersive journey through time – from the very origins of the universe to the extraordinary diversity of plant life we see today.

This is not simply an evening walk. It is a carefully choreographed experience that blends science, storytelling, light art, and music into a memorable winter adventure for all ages.
A journey through the evolution of life
Floridylle invites visitors to follow a gently winding trail of approximately 3.5 kilometres, where more than 20 unique light installations reveal the story of life on Earth. The journey begins with the spark of the Big Bang and unfolds through the emergence of early life forms, graceful magnolias, and intricate diatoms, culminating in the spectacular floral richness we know today.
Along the way, illuminated paths lead you through the iconic Balat Greenhouse, the Plant Palace, atmospheric woodland sections that feel straight out of a fairy tale, and onwards to the castle. Carefully selected music accompanies the route, enhancing the sense of immersion and adding emotional depth to the experience.

The result is a walk that feels both educational and poetic – a reminder of how closely light, time, and nature are intertwined.
A personal favourite, winter after winter
Meise Botanic Garden has long been one of my favourite botanical gardens in Belgium. I have visited many times throughout the year, but I have a particular fondness for their winter evening walks. There is something deeply special about seeing familiar paths transformed by light, colour, and silence, when the garden feels both intimate and otherworldly.
Previous winter editions have always left me with that rare feeling of having stepped briefly into another world – calmer, slower, and quietly awe-inspiring. Floridylle promises exactly that kind of experience once again: one that invites you to look differently, slow your pace, and reconnect with nature in a season when we often forget to do so.
Designed for families, friends, and shared moments
Floridylle is intentionally accessible and welcoming. The entire route is suitable for children, wheelchair users, and prams, making it an ideal winter outing for families or multi-generational groups. Along the trail, there are plenty of opportunities to pause, take photos, and simply enjoy being together in a beautifully lit environment.

Practical touches make the evening even more enjoyable: clear pathways, thoughtful pacing, and a layout that allows everyone to experience the installations comfortably without feeling rushed.
Warmth, lights, and winter cosiness
At the end of the walk, the Winter Village awaits. Here, warm drinks, comforting snacks, and a convivial atmosphere offer the perfect way to round off the evening. Food trucks and the new Restaurant Pachthof provide seasonal treats, while the Garden Shop at the Empress Charlotte Entrance offers original gifts and festive delights – well worth a browse before heading home.

Do come prepared: sturdy walking shoes or boots are recommended, as winter paths can be muddy, and warm clothing is essential. On rainy evenings, an umbrella is a wise companion.
